Contra Costa Superior Court Departments
Civil Department
The Civil Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court handles cases related to civil discovery, civil harassment, and complex litigation. Civil lawsuits in the Contra Costa Superior Court are divided into one of three categories, depending on the amount of money involved in the matter. Cases involving sums under $10,000 are small claims cases, sums between $1 to $25,000 are civil cases with limited jurisdiction, and sums over $25,000 are unlimited jurisdiction civil cases.

The Criminal Department runs the Felony & Misdemeanor Court, which hears matters involving felonies, misdemeanors, and infractions.

Family and Children Department
The Contra Costa County Superior Court Family and Children Department handles cases involving divorce, legal separation, annulment, nullity, establishing parentage, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, family support, marital property division, domestic violence, and restraining orders.

The Jury Service Department is responsible for providing the Courts with qualified jurors from the community.

Juvenile Department
The Juvenile Department manages the Juvenile Justice Court, which handles cases related to juvenile status offenses concerning noncriminal behaviors that are illegal because of the child's age, juvenile delinquencies, and juvenile dependency.

Probate Department
The Probate Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court supervises the distribution of assets and the payment of debts after the death of a person. It handles matters related to estates, wills, trusts, conservatorships, and guardianships.

Small Claims Department
This department includes the Small Claims Court, which hears cases where the monetary claim does not exceed $10,000 for a natural person and $5,000 for a corporation, limited liability company, or a partnership.

Appellate Department
The Appellate Department of the Contra Costa County Superior Court hears appeals arising from unlimited civil cases; criminal appeals that arise from felonies or misdemeanors; criminal traffic appeals; and juvenile appeals.
Most appeals are limited to a review of the record from the lower court. Parties cannot introduce new evidence, but are limited to what was said and introduced at the original trial.
Traffic Department
The Traffic Department, which runs the Traffic Court, deals with cases related to traffic, including violations, bail, and fines.

Restraining Orders Department
The Restraining Orders Department deals with matters relating to restraining orders, and because there are many types of restraining orders, matters are handled at two separate locations.
Domestic violence restraining orders, are handled at the Spinetta Family Courthouse. Restraining orders for issues relating to elder abuse, workplace violence, or civil harassment are handled at the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse.
